Survey in the Indian PR industry
By Editor on Jun 11, 2006 in industry
We need a survey in the Public Relations industry in India. A survey that reveals which agency is paying the best and which the worst, which agency has employee friendly policies and which wants to use employees as factory laborers, which agency services its clients in what manner and which in another manner.
OK if you are a senior management or a HR person, you might be thinking what does Hobbit Hob thinks of himself. If you are a newbie, you will think oh good! If you are among those like who have spent some years in the industry, you will probably say, who cares, I know everything who’s doing what and which is the best.
But think about it for a second. Didn’t you wish ever there was an unbiased industry survey done by someone in the PR industry that broadcasts everything about each agency? If there was, we wouldn’t have to nod our heads cluelessly to whatever remuneration we were offered in our initial years. We can say a no when our bosses ask us to stay till 9 pm on two consecutive Saturdays.
There is benefit for senior management and HR people as well from a survey, they will know what their competitors are offering.
So how about an unofficial PR industry survey, contributed by each one of PR professionals out there? You know very well, no agency is going to do it, no media publications, and no market research agency. They damn care what is happening with the PR industry. They have nothing to gain.

funnily enough i heard there was a pr organization (no,im not going to tell you the name) that suggested the same thing. An independant body would survey the industry on salary paid, this was to done in an effort to standardize and raise the level of the PR industry.
However some members of this PR body felt that the cost was too high ( this was the shared cost by the way) and backed out. Like you said Hobbit “They damn care what is happening with the PR industry. They have nothing to gain.”
In the end, they agency that exploits his people loses, the guy who pays on the higher is accused of ruining the industry or trying to steal talent from the others….. No win situation.

hi sj
Long time! So then, the time calls for an unofficial survey. Everybody ought to know what is happening where, who’s getting what, and who’s doing what. Only then we can learn many things and grow together. Otherwise confined in the agencies of our own, we will end up just thinking we are doing the best.
